Reading: Ancient Egyptian Myths, Part A

Stories taken from Egyptian Myth and Legend by Donald Mackenzie
One of the stories was about how Isis wanted to know Ra's secret name that gave him power. She was envious of his powers and wanted to share his gifts. She decided to create a plan on how to get his name from him. One day when Ra was walking along a path, he was speaking to his companions. As he spoke his spit fell and hit the earth. Isis then placed her hand on the earth and made a serpent out of the earth and spit. She enchanted the creature to not be seen by gods or man and to stay on the path that Ra would walk along. The creature bit him and he was filled with poison that coursed through his veins. After pleading for help, Isis offered to try to heal him in a few different ways. After failed attempts, she told him that the names she had been given would not heal him. Ra would have to give her the secret name to be healed properly. After this Ra gave the decree and disappeared, after some time Isis heard his secret name in her heart. She then cast the spell to remove all of the poison from Ra and he returned and was visible.

Another story talked about the story of Osiris and his death. Osiris' brother was jealous of him and planned to kill him with the help of his followers. They created a box that would only perfectly fit Osiris to give as a present. Once he was in the box, they sealed it shut with nails and stole the body away. The box was thrown into the Nile where it drifted to the sea. Through the story it tells of the queen, his wife, and her journey in obtaining her husband's body after it had been taken. She took many different forms in her quest to find the body. This is where the origin story of the mummy comes from.
