Reading Notes: Blackfoot Stories, Part A

The stores from this reading were taken from Blackfeet Indian Stories by George Bird Grinnell.

There were many different stories that I read during this section, but one main story caught my attention. The story is called The Wolf Man. This is the story that starts off telling about a man and his two wives. The wives were not doing their house duties and usually were off visiting family. This frustrated the man, so he decided to move his home to the high hill to teach them a lesson. The wives were starting to get lonely being away from their family and devised a plot to kill the man. The man went out and sat on a hill that had an animal skull on it every night. They dug a hole under the skull and made it look like the earth was solid around it. When the man came back with his meat from a hunt, the wives ran out to make him food with it. After he ate, he went out to the hill and sat on the skull. The hole caved in and the two wives were watching. The wives packed up the home and animals and hurried back to the village. They pretended that the husband had died while out hunting and staying in the village. The man cried out for help and tried to get out of the hole, but he was too badly hurt by the fall. A wolf heard his cries after a few days and came and saw him stuck. The wolf took pity and called out to the other animals for help. The wolf explained to them that they were to dig him out and the man would come to live with the wolves. The animals agreed and dug the man out, and the wolves fed him and nursed him back to health. There was an old blind wolf with powers that healed the man and made him have a wolf face, hands, and feet. After then the man helped the wolves pick the traps that were set to kill them for trying to steal the villager's meat. Finally, the villagers realized that there was a Wolf Man living among the wolves and set out to capture him. When they finally captured him, they realized that he was the missing man the wives claimed had died. The village asked what the punishment for the wives should be, and the Wolf Man said it was up to the society. The wives were never found after that night.
