Reading Notes: English Fairy Tales, Part B

Reading notes were taken from English Fairy Tales by Joseph Jacobs.

There were many different tales in this section of the stories. The one I ended up liking the most was called Mr. Fox because of the happier ending in it.

The story called Mr. Fox was about a young woman called Lady Mary. She was sought after by many suitors and only one had her heart. His name was Mr. Fox and they finally agreed to get married. The Lady Mary had never been to his castle and he never invited her or her brothers over. One day she decided to go and find his castle to see what it looked like. She came upon the castle and it had high walls and a deep moat. There was writing that said, "be bold, be bold" on the outside of the gateway. She ventured through the castle and saw the various writings around the walls. She came upon a door and opened it and was frightened by the scene. There were bodies and skeletons of young women all stained with blood. Terrified, she ran away from the room but heard Mr. Fox come home. She hid behind a cask and waited for him to pass. Mr. Fox was dragging a young woman in with him who seemed to have fainted. Mr. Fox tried pulling a diamond ring off the passed-out young woman but it wouldn't budge. Finally, he chopped off the hand but it flew in the air and landed on the hiding woman's lap. Mr. Fox looked around for it but eventually gave up and dragged the now bleeding young woman up the stairs. Lady Mary ran home as fast as she could once he was gone. The next day they were supposed to sign the marriage contract, and the family threw a grand breakfast. Mr. Fox commented on how pale Lady Mary looked and she told him about a nightmare she had. She then revealed that Mr. Fox had killed the young woman and pulled the ring out as proof. Then her brothers jumped him and cut him up into pieces.
