Reading Notes: Khasi Folktales, Part A

Stories read taken from: Folktales of the Khasis by Mrs. K. U. Rafy

The first story was about the monkeys and the tiger and how they played an elaborate trick on the tiger. The tiger had fallen in love with a bug's song but was unable to find the source of music. He thought it was a monkey and asked the tribe if it was one of them. One monkey decided to trick the tiger and told him that it was his sister who was singing. The tiger demanded that he be wed to the sister and in order to protect the brother monkey, the tribe agreed. They made a fake bride out of clay and hid the figure in linens and fine cloth. The tiger came back to take his bride, but the monkeys told him she was asleep, and he would have to wake her. They told him to put the string from the net he brought around her neck and tug. The tiger did this not knowing that the monkeys had not fastened the clay head to the body and the head popped off. The monkeys faked anger and started a battle with the tiger to avenge the dead 'sister'.

The next story was about the Legend of the Lei Tree. In the story the infamous tree became so big and the shadow it cast made the land devoid of all life. The people had a gathering and decided to cut the tree to save mankind. A group of skilled woodcutters went into the dangerous land to fulfill their task. They cut the wood all day, but it was healed back the next morning. A little grey bird came to their rescue and told them the secret they had been looking for. A tiger would come in the night and lick the tree to heal it. The next night the wood cutters kept the axes in the tree and the tiger cut his tongue and never returned. The lei tree was finally cut down and humanity was saved by the little bird.
